Amigos de Libros

My students need 9 sets of Spanish Language books such as Three Little Pigs, Los Tres Cerditos, Chickens/Las Gallinas, El Sol and Amazing Eggs/Huevos Asombrosos, in sets of 12 for our Spanish Book Club.

My Students

Many of my students speak Spanish at home, but seldom have the opportunity to experience Spanish language and grammar in the form of books. Experts agree that the best time to acquire a second language is when you are young. My best students need the opportunity to build their bilingual skills now.

My students are resourceful and resilient.

Many of them live well below the poverty line. Some live in shelters. My students are urban and international. Our school is in an industrial side of town, in a city in CT that struggles to fund its school system. About half of my students speak another language at home although only about 20% qualify for ELL services. Our school is large and serves about 1000 students. We pride ourselves in our close knit community that often rallies to support each other during the tough times. Though our school community has faced all manner of hardship and more than our share of tragedy, our students are amazingly talented and hardworking. My students need exposure to high quality children's literature to read and share with their peers.

My Project

My students need 9 sets of Spanish Language books such as Three Little Pigs, Los Tres Cerditos, Chickens/Las Gallinas, El Sol and Amazing Eggs/Huevos Asombrosos, in sets of 12 for our Spanish Book Club. My students need these bilingual materials to use during Spanish Club. These books will be used as resources for our Second Grade Spanish Book Club. This project will begin in September and end in June, with the club meeting twice a week to read, discuss and respond to the material. Four of the books are fairy tales that students are already familiar with in English. The other books are non fiction titles that will provide them with scientific vocabulary. All of the books have been selected to coordinate with the current curriculum, and should serve as an excellent enrichment activity for my strongest readers who can handle the challenge of acquiring a second language. The students will use the books to practice both their reading, and their speaking skills, and work with a Spanish Speaking adult to nurture their Spanish Language acquisition. In addition to strengthening their Second Language literacy skills, my students, will improve their cooperative skills, and broaden their knowledge of other cultures.

The enjoyment of quality Children's Literature is crucial to a child's early classroom experience.

Our hope for our Spanish Book Club, is to establish a lifelong appreciation of language, and reading. Learning a second language can be a daunting enterprise for students that are economically disadvantaged. Providing them with good books and a good friends to help could go a very long way toward closing the Literacy Gap and producing truly Bilingual students who are ready for the 21st Century.
