Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember as a child how many questions you had about the world? Any topic, issue, or experience I bring into the classroom prompts many questions from my students. My students need a computer to research the answers to their questions.

My school is a Title 1 school in LAUSD and is made up of over 95% Latino/Hispanic students.

The school also participates in the Free/Reduced Meal Plan. All of my students are English Language Learners. They struggle with reading fluency and especially reading comprehension. However, they are all very eager and motivated to improve their reading level so they can access written information to explore and learn about the world they live in.

My Project

My students have very limited real world experiences. I give them access to learn about the world. For Halloween, I brought in a pumpkin to carve with my students, only to find out that most of my students had never carved a pumpkin. I took my students to Santa Monica Beach to learn about the marine life, only to find out that most of my students have never been to the beach. I brought in a speaker and her guide dog to talk to my students about how she trains dogs for the blind, only to find out that most of my students did not know what it meant to be blind. When was the first Jack-o-Lantern made? What is the biggest animal in the ocean? Can I train a guide dog? These were just some of the questions my students asked me as I opened their eyes to new real world experiences. A computer would give my students immediate access to research the answers to their questions and share that additional information with the class. They can be teachers in my classroom!

My project will fund a classroom computer to help inspire a future marine biologist, a future doctor, a future business person, a future lawyer, a future teacher, a future leader, a future America.

Help my students access the world of information to answer their questions and learn about the many things that interest them.
