Ambitious Designs and Altered Transformations

My students need sewing supplies to help them create up-cycled fashions such as a proper functioning sewing machine, thread, elastic for clothing construction and fashion design.

My Students

My students come to school every day willing and wanting to learn. They are filled with enthusiasm and expressing themselves through the creative process. Having good, products and materials available will help them bring their imaginative ideas into reality.

My middle school art room is located in a very low income, urban area.

Our student population is diverse and includes a large percentage of English language learners. Having the means to experience learning through the visual arts is not always possible because of financial means. Therefore, being involved in creating art in a public school is a great opportunity! Creating fashion, helps my students use their problem solving skills. Due to the nature of creating and collaborating when designing fashion, they strengthen their language skills, through creative process. For example, when they deconstruct a garment and reconstruct it into a new fashion, they need to organize, evaluate and communicate with their peers when problem solving and manipulating the materials. By using recycled materials or transforming a piece of garment into a new wearable fashion, will be exciting! Having good Materials will help my students create wearable fashion.

My Project

My students need sewing supplies to help them create up-cycled fashions such as a proper functioning sewing machine, thread, elastic for clothing construction and fashion design. Imagine being in middle-school...again. The need to find ones place in the world, be part of a school community and make friends. Individuality is a big part of an adolescents ideals, being able to express themselves through their clothing becomes a big part of their identity. Now, imagine having less resources that make learning fun. In my art class, my students will use their imagination and collaborate with others. They plan, design, organize and produce a "real world" product. How can my middle-school students have greater opportunities in education? How can my students increase their confidence in themselves and have autonomy when learning? The answer needs to be in having greater, more fulfilling experiences in education. Having proper materials, such as a proper functioning sewing machine, thread and elastic, to work with, will increase my student's ability to express themselves and make learning fun.

Donations to our school's Project Runway elective, will make learning fun!

Having the proper materials and equipment to use will increase work efficiency and help their ideas come to life. They use math skills in a new way, measuring and using geometric shapes to create fashion patterns, applying learned knowledge through the process of creating. Then, these up-cycled wearable fashion designs are shown during our year end fashion show. Their involvement and doing is "real world" and exciting.
