I teach an amazing group of students with mild to severe special needs. We are a community-based program located in the heart of a blue collar neighborhood in a large, urban area in Indiana.
In our program, we are constantly on the move focusing on vocational skills as well as community and life skills that will make students as independent as possible.
They are an absolutely great group full of life. You can't help but get excited about life when you are around them. We are always looking for ways to work on social skills while being physically active and broadening their world view. At the same time building critical thinking and problem solving skills.
My Project
There are a lot of things that go into being independent. You have to master person care skills, interpersonal skills, and learning social cues to name a few. But, the one that causes the greatest challenge for my students with special needs is time management.

By using the tablet and setting simple alarms and reminders your independence would multiply. The freedom of not relying on someone else to tell you when its time to leave or do something is incredibly liberating. That is the power that this tablet has.
