My Project

At the beginning of the year, I asked my 9th-grade English students to share their feelings about reading. Many students expressed a disinterest in reading or told me that they used to love reading, but it had been a long time since they had picked up a book. At the same time, I also asked them to set a goal for English class this year.

The majority of my students set a goals about becoming a better reader or finding more books that they enjoy, and it is my mission to help them achieve these goals.

This year, we have started a new independent reading program, and it has been a joy to watch students find books they love and discover themselves as readers. Between the students who have discovered a love of reading and the students who are still searching for their just-right book, my classroom library has gotten more use than ever before.

Your donation to this project will allow me to purchase sports books for my many sports-loving students-- especially sports books featuring female main characters, such as Break My Fall. The two most popular genres this year have definitely been romance and sci-fi, so your generosity will also allow me to add a wide-range of these books such as When Dimple Met Rishi and The Martian. I also have several Spanish-speaking students in my classes this year, so it is important that I also a variety of Spanish-language books from which they can choose.
