Nothing is more rewarding than to witness students excited about learning. Writing if very difficult and many students do not want to try writing because they are afraid of failing.
We are located in a rural district in Ohio.
My 24 students are a big, kind and caring bunch. They are very concerned for the well being on their classmates. Just recently my class had the idea to offer their help to the custodians. They asked the custodians to tell my class when it is messy in the bathroom so that they can go help clean it! They are great kids!
My Project
As I have mentioned, writing is very difficult for students. You have to think of a thought and then transfer that thought to writing. This is completely out of the comfort zone for students because they are asked to attempt spelling of words that they have never learned.
In order to motivate some of my students to try writing, I have started using publishing books from Lakeshore. These books are just like real books. The pages are sewed together, they have a title page, blank writing pages with a box for illustrations and finally an, "About the Author" page. My students go wild about these books! They also write a copyright date on their book and add a cardstock cover. My students are expected to complete one story a week. During the last week of the month, they choose their best drafting story and publish it in these books. Upon further research I found hardcover publishing books at Lakeshore! I would love to use these motivating books for publishing at the end of the year
Writing is scary for 6 and 7 year old students.
Writing is important because it is connected to reading. Often when students can write, their reading also improves. These blank books allow some students the extra push that they need for motivation to complete writing during the month. They also will have all of the published books to keep and share with their families. Please consider donating to our project!
