This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach 5th grade science and social studies to 75 students in an urban setting. Many of my students have had challenging experiences in their young lives and need lots of support and encouragement in the classroom. What I have discovered about my 5th graders, is that they get truly excited when learning science, and particularly when it is hands on. My students love to make connections to what they are learning in class to the world that they live in. Last year, students in my class dissected owl pellets when we were learning about ecosystems. They made and launched their own rockets as they were studying force and motion. These are just two examples of a few projects they were engaged in! I would love to be able to have them do even more this year!
My Project
I would like my students' study of Ecosystems to come to life for them. I would love for my students to be able to create living pond ecosystems in small groups to study the relationships among the organisms and learn about food chain and food webs.
My students will develop a stronger understanding of producers, consumers, and decomposers and how all of these organisms are interdependent on each other as would have the opportunity to be real scientists as they make predictions and observations during their ecosystem study.
This hands-on learning opportunity will allow my students to better understand ecosystems.
