Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our classroom is a place where we practice our English every day- focusing on listening and speaking so we can succeed in school. We love art, science and social studies and the best way to integrate all our Common Core language arts standards is to do it with these kinds of subjects!
My students are eager learners who are newer English speakers.
90% of my students are from low socio-economic homes. Our school is located within walking distance to Disneyland. We love Disney and being creative. My sweet students do not have the resources at home to complete projects, so we do all of them at school. The students and parents alike are so excited about the projects we do and are proud to show them off at Open House. They will be displayed in a place of honor at home!
My students love to learn and the best way to accomplish all we need to do is to integrate a couple of subjects into one activity. We often do art with writing, or combine science with drawing so that they can process this new information. Learning new vocabulary is crucial for our academic success and it is woven through our daily lessons. Our school focuses on respect, responsibility, and safety.
My Project
Over 6 weeks time, we will be reading about animals (integrating non fiction, science text). As we learn new vocabulary, my students will add it to their vocabulary journals to help them use the words correctly and to remember our new words.
My students will be writing a book of their own (practicing reading, writing, and ART integrated with science) about an animal of their choice. We will discuss the animal's adaptations, diet, habitat etc. We will learn to take notes, and then write the paragraphs for the pages. The students will use ART materials to illustrate the pages of their books. (VAPA 3rd grade standards- 1.2 tints/shades; 2.3 landscape/seascape; 1.4 works with different media). They have never created their own books, so this is a unique and lasting experience.
The students will then create a poster to display the main information about their animal and present this information orally to their peers to practice their English. This unit takes place in Spring 2015.
My students need hard cover blank books, colored pencils, paint, glue, craft sticks, crayons, and water colors to create their books and posters.
I usually buy the "extras" (books, poster board, supplies) with my own money because the school's budget doesn't cover this.
It means so much to my students to be able to write their own books! They are SO PROUD of the hard work it takes to complete this kind of project. Their parents are not usually able to read the book (it is in English) so the students will enjoy "teaching" their parents. This project gives them confidence and builds their self esteem as students.
