My Students

My classroom is full of fifth graders who are eager to learn and succeed. Even though all these students are the same age, their skills and needs greatly differ. I teach in Utah, a state that is known to have high numbers of students in each classroom. Not only do I have high numbers in my class, but I also have a diverse group of learners. I have students functioning well below grade level in reading and math; I also have students functioning well above grade level. I have students who have a passion for learning, and some who are disconnected from academics. My students come from culturally diverse backgrounds; many students are English Language Learners. To compound challenges, many students are economically disadvantaged.

My Project

The students entering my fifth-grade classroom were not alive on September 11, 2001. From my experience, my fifth graders know very little of the events and heroes of Patriot Day. Fifth-grade social studies center on American history and this topic needs to be included in their learning experience. I feel it is important for kids to learn about the events, but more importantly the heroes of 9-11. In the past as I have taught my students about 9-11 it is apparent they are so curious, are filled with questions, and seek understanding.

I know as students learn of the heroes of 9-11, they are inspired by ordinary individuals who rise up and become extraordinary heroes!

Little by little I have added to the resources in my classroom to help my students learn about September 11th. These books would add a new element to our study of Patriot Day.
