Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In my class of 26 GATE students, some have ADHD or receive RSP services. They all have a very positive attitude and do their personal best to contribute to our classroom community. They are very creative and likes to be challenged all the time. My students enjoy hands-on activities and are always looking forward to STEAM activities. For Halloween, we built Bone Bridges using only Q-tips, popsicle sticks, and pipe cleaners. It was great to watch my students formulate different strategies to build the longest bridge. We had many "A-ha moments." In the end, everyone took pride in their creativity and the bridges now stand in my classroom as a reminder of their ingenuity.
My students respond well to hands-on activity, but it can be difficult to meet these needs on a limited budget.
My Project
In our school, our fifth grade students rotate for science. I teach states of matter, atoms and molecules in my rotation. Students are able to easily relate to matter and states of matter, but when it comes to atoms and how atoms are packed or atoms are connected to each other, they get thrown off. As of right now, all I can do is simply project pictures and hope they can get something out of it. This set will not only provide visual but also tactile learning, enabling students with different learning styles to understand the material. Different color pens can help color code their drawings and notepads will help them stay more organized.
This is my first year of teaching, and as a new teacher, I am dependent on donations.
