My Students
My awesome second graders come from a very low socioeconomic background with the majority falling below the poverty line. They are mainly English language learners (80%) and many of them live in homes which house multiple families under the same roof. The median income is well below poverty level, with some being homeless. Some of these seven- and eight-year olds have the sole responsibility of taking care of their younger siblings while their parents are working, with many parents working more than one job. Others are latchkey children.
Our school is Title I and 90% of the children receive free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch.
In addition to the many challenges that these hard-working students face, they also are coping with the fact that our school is situated in a high crime area with frequent gang activity. My children have extremely limited access to technology in their homes, yet with all these obstacles, my students come to school with much enthusiasm and an eager desire to learn.
My Project
Alternate and reneweable energy sources are hot topics in classrooms and around the world. Students need to learn and understand that these types of energy sources are important sources of energy for today and the future of our planet. This is why I would like my students to have access to the hands on DIY assemble solar power car kits and bug kits so that they can construct and learn about how these things move using the solar energy power of the sun. In addition, they will also learn about renewable energy which is produced using natural resources that are constantly replaced and never run out. Students wil be working in small groups to create and build their own wind turbines that can power and light up a LED light using clean and renewable wind energy! These STEM kits will provide my students with a hands-on approach to see some of these alternative and renewable energy sources in action.
