Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a community school. Most of our students have come to us from one of 64 home countries other than the United States. Many of the children have spent more time in refugee camps than their home country. Our students speak a total of 65 different home languages and dialects. Many of the students come to us knowing little or no English. Some of the children have not had any formal education. Some of the children have had interrupted education. Many of the children struggle with the intricacies of school when they first come to us. Consider how strange a United States school must seem to children who have not ever sat at a desk or used indoor plumbing.
My Project
Alternative seating allows for flexibility. Students spend too much time in one spot on a daily basis. Alternative seating models help free up space in the classroom to better allow children to move around. Some of the benefits are improved behavior and social participation, lowered restlessness, and better and longer attention and focus. Morning meetings, restorative circles and reading groups are just a few of the class activities that will be impacted from alternative seating. We are very excited with the possibilities!
