This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
Working at a large urban middle school presents many challenges for teachers. We have little control over the lives of students outside of school and we work hard every day to ensure the success of students in the ways that we can control. One of the ways to contribute to student success is to provide them with a learning space that is the most conducive to their success and gives them the chance to take ownership over a small part of their day.
Alternative seating provides students not only the chance to take ownership over one part of their day, but it also sets them up for success in their academics.
Whether it is a student with ADHD that is struggling to sit still, a student who is sick of sitting in an uncomfortable desk, or simply a student who likes to sit on stools instead of chairs, alternative seating is a great addition to a classroom. Students need to be given certain levels of autonomy that they can use to better their learning experience and giving them options for seating is an easy way to provide that to them.
