Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students deserve a 21st century education that allows them to not only absorb content, but to apply what they have learned in meaningful real-world experiences. Four years ago, a group of teachers decided to provide students with hands-on ownership of their learning. This was a major pedagogical shift that allowed our students to utilize project-based learning as an outlet for deeper more relevant learning.
Our students live in a beautiful rural community that values STEAM and project-based learning.
Students need to be prepared for high school as well as college and career. Allowing them a global understanding will better open opportunities to themselves and their community. This drive to give students every opportunity possible is a mission and a vision of this school district.
My Project
My Students participate in three hands on cross-curricular STEM activities throughout the year. We are early implementers of NGSS and have used science as our lens for our units.
Our students will be looking at alternative energy sources through research and application in their history, science, math and English classes.
Having the simple machines to build not only supports NGSS, but also allows our students to use key 21st century skills.
The simple machines and renewable add on energy kit will be used in our history and English classes to so they can apply what alternative energy machines look like in a student-centered environment. The add on kit allows them to manipulate energy types such as solar cells, wind turbines and hydroelectric power plants.
In their science classes, they will take these experiences and apply them to their design thinking challenge of building and designing efficient blades for wind turbines. The materials requested would add to the student experience by allowing them to not just read about the science of alternative energies, but also apply what they have learned
