This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

The STEAM Team is a collection of 20 students, led by Julie. These students are planning and organizing a Science & Technology Festival. Part of their aim is to engage the local and surrounding communities in science with hands-on activities, demos, and career panels. These young leaders rock!

My students love science and learning. They feel that a well rounded education in STEAM, particularly in the E and T (engineering and technology), is severely lacking in our district. That is why they are organizing a hands on Science & Tech Festival for our community. They want to bring together schools in our district from elementary to middle school to high school (targeting 4th-12th graders) for a day of playing, making, & learning. My students are in charge of finding not only presenters, lecturers, career panelists to answer audience questions, and scientists to demonstrate experiments, but they will also present their own STEAM related club activities. They chose to experiment with alternative energy technologies by building and presenting K'Nex and SnapCircuits. They plan to share their findings with the festival attendees. The event will be February 20th.

Students will learn the power of team-work, leadership, creative thinking, and presentation skills through this interactive building project. By working together to create solar cars, water-powered levies, and snap-based circuits, the Tokay STEAM Team will be exposed to engineering and innovation, especially in light of the Maker movement. These skills can be applied to future careers or solving environmental hurdles with creative solutions. Although the focus of the festival is science & technology, they see the arts and engineering specifically as extremely interconnected, with students working together with innovative materials to build something functional, creative, & aesthetically pleasing. They hope to innovate and creatively think much like artists with their paintbrushes, wires, levies, and pulleys. Such a project will spur a new way of creative thinking and potentially create the next generation of "artrepreneurs" .

In Their Own Words

Our goal is twofold: we would like to push our creative boundaries by building alternative energy models and sharing our findings with other students. It is our goal to inspire more kids to be actively involved in science. The festival, and presenting such projects at the festival, will help us accomplish this. With your help, our STEAM team of 20 will be able to create, innovate, and problem solve in a medium many of us have never been exposed to (but are curious about).

We currently meet every other Wednesday and will use the time to learn from trial and error to get our projects built and functioning. Various students will take on different roles and work together in teams on different projects, and we will all share our findings with and help each other if needed.

This project is important to us because it gives us an opportunity to explore engineering, specifically civil and electrical engineering. The opportunity to build and create in a fun environment will create excitement and interest in STEAM related activities that will create an awareness in how it affects our daily lives.
