Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
To prosper in a global society, one must truly understand diversity. I teach tenth grade English at a high-need school where 100% of the students receive free lunch due to income. The school is 90% Hispanic. My students are extremely ambitious and sincerely crave knowledge. Their intellectual curiosity would be greatly enhanced by reading The Kite Runner which will build on and improve their historical, cultural, and literary skills. The desire to help those in need and to care about global issues as well as our fellow man are cornerstones of colleges.
Our English book list has many classics, but few books that explore the world outside of the United States and Western Europe. Receiving a class-set of The Kite Runner will introduce them to a new culture and expand their knowledge-base. It will also introduce them to international issues of concern and hopefully inspire them to get involved with helping those affected by international crises. Many of my students are from the Dominican Republic and are searching for ways to help the people of Haiti. This will allow them to stay on the path of aiding people in need throughout the world. The increased level of community service that will come out of this project will certainly benefit the students as they prepare for college.
We would like to purchase a class set (35 copies) of The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. We will read this book and have class discussions of the literature and what can be done to help the people of Afghanistan and individuals in the region. I would like to start a humanitarian club in the school to address these issues. All of this, I believe, will get off the ground with the introduction of The Kite Runner.
Your donation will go beyond helping my students understand the concept of multiculturalism. Your donation will start by helping enlighten a group of 35 students about what is occurring in the world around them and the need to foster understanding and protest intolerance. These 35 students will then do presentations for the entire school, and then the effects will be felt throughout the community. I have no doubt that students will become involved with organizations like Habitat for Humanity and be inspired to truly affect our international society.
