My Students

My students are faced with challenges both in and out of the classroom. I am a special education teacher in a Title I school. To address the many challenges they face, I strive to provide a learning environment that is engaging, promotes attention as well as instruction, and is effective and inspirational.

In the classroom, many of my students struggle to maintain focus and are behind academically.

I serve students with a range of disabilities, including other health impairment, traumatic brain injury, autism spectrum disorder and specific learning disability. Most of the students I teach are reading two or more grade levels below the grade they are currently in.

My Project

Sometimes it's just impossible to sit still AND listen. By having the opportunity to wiggle a bit while seated for small group instruction, the students can often do both.

Movement is an exterior stimulus, and as long as the learner is engaged in his or her learning their attention is directed toward what is being learned.

When attention is purely mental (interior), the activity becomes very difficult to sustain because the nerve and muscle systems are inactive.

These wobble stools will provide the opportunity to move and learn at the same time, allowing each student to progress and be successful in their academics.
