Our students are from an urban high school with the unique benefit of being incredibly diverse. They come from neighborhoods all around the city that are very different from one another. Our department teaches multiple levels of students, so they range from kids who are struggling to those who will attend prestigious universities. The kids are amazing and most work to the best of their abilities, but it is truly important to me to reach EVERY student!
Because many of our students come from backgrounds where they have a variety of challenges, we would love to provide materials that have all of the essentials necessary to access history in a fun and creative way.
The New York Times Upfront Magazines are an amazing resource for our entire department, as they provide accessible current events articles. They also include maps and other fun activities that are incredibly engaging and relevant to many of the topics we teach. It enables all students to engage in history from a current events perspective that they can discuss as a group.
My Project
The New York Times Upfront Magazines are an amazing current events resource for all levels of students that enable them to connect current issues with historical events. Most teachers in our department will utilize these magazines at some point in the year to help students understand the importance of events happening both in the country and around the world. Students learn to connect decisions made by today's leaders to those made in the past to see what has changed over time. They are able to utilize critical thinking and analysis skills in completing written assessments about the articles.
Students also learn communication and discussion skills through the use of the articles in the Upfront magazines, as they will conduct in-depth conversations about the implications of events taking place around the world.
They are able to analyze how connections between countries will play out in the future and how they may handle a variety of situations if put in a leadership position. Kids are always engaged with the news stories that are well written and from an objective standpoint.
