My Students

Parents send us the best that they have. Although many of my students face unique challenges every day before they even come into my classroom, they come in eager to learn. Most of my students live in poverty and their parents hope that their child's education will lead to a better future. Ninety-eight percent of my students come from minority backgrounds, with fifty percent being English Language Learners.

Many kindergartners have not had a preschool experience and I want to do my best to make it a fantastic year for them.

Very few children have access to educational toys and books. It is my job as their teacher to expose my students to as much as I possibly can. I want my students to enjoy coming to school and learning.

My Project

Todays' kindergarten classrooms look different than they did years ago. A typical day in a kindergarten classroom looks something like around 15 different academic activities, which include decoding, word drills, practicing sight words, reading to themselves and then to a buddy, counting up to 100 by 1's, 5's and 10's, practicing simple addition, completing science activities and writing in journals on multiple occasions.

Research has consistently shown classrooms that offer children the opportunities to engage in play-based and child-centered learning activities help children grow academically, socially and emotionally.

Furthermore, recess and other activities in particular help children restore their attention to learning in the classroom.

Play-Doh is a great way to for students to engage in play-based learning centers. We will use the Play-Doh and stamps to cut out spelling words and high-frequency words to practice reading and spelling. We will also cut out numbers and pinch off Play-Doh balls for one to one correspondence to get a deeper understanding of number sense.

The kinetic rock and sand will be used as a science center to help students have a better understanding of properties of matter. After exploring the science activities students will be able to write in their science journals about their experiences and what they have learned.

Not only will we use these materials as learning centers but we will also use the materials for indoor recess on days that have bad weather and prevent us from going outside. These materials will allow my students a way to learn, explore and relax helping restore their attention to learning.

These materials are a fun and creative way to bring back child-centered activities while keeping up with the rigorous academic expectations of today's' kindergarten classroom.
