My students need books which emphasize social justice and diversity such as 'The Poet X' and 'The Night Diary' and a Bonaok microphone to practice their own slam poems.
I have around 100 students throughout a school day! We live in a very rural area and have a small community. Our elementary and middle schools share a building. These students are kind, energetic, and full of life and potential. I see barriers though, coming their way with today's ever growing statistics against creative young minds clashing against them. They are held back from much due to funds and life's hardships. These students deserve the best!
They deserve to live 'big city' lives in our rural community.
These kids should experience diverse cultures and social justice through literature, living in such as diverse restricted area.
In small communities, money is spread thin. We are there for each other in every family tragedy, fire, hospital visit, etc. We donate where we can and help often. We cannot keep asking the parents to fund their students' educations; their leather wallets becoming tattered threads. Please help these students to become information genius'. To think of, seek from, and expand on information as a habit and a privilege.
My Project
In a population where 94% of students identify as White we need more diverse literature for students to engage in. Students need to be emerged in diverse cultures, experience social justice issues, and read about viewpoints different than their own. Reading books such as 'The Poet X,' 'Patina', and 'Rebound' will give these opportunities to my students. Students can continue to become more emphatic citizens by learning about different cultures and issues they don't necessarily interact with on a daily basis. Utilizing the Bonaok microphone will also aid in giving students a voice, presenting slam poetry, as well as emphasizing all voices matter.
