I have ordered 65 copies of Shakespeare's classic Romeo and Juliet. Love and heartbreak could be the title for a day in the life of middle school. This play gives the students an outlet for their emotional turmoil and shows them how mishandling a conflict can lead to disaster. Thank you in advance
The 8th grade students are predominantly African American, Hispanic and Caribbean immigrants.
The school is located in the heart of one of Pennsylvania's poorest Urban communities. It was considered a failing school and became a charter school two years ago. The students having been rising to the challenge of a more rigorous academic curriculum. They are full of energy and integrating drama will help showcase their many talents. The aim is to expose them to as many genres of literature from around the world.
There are many phases, idioms and metaphors in Standard American English that come directly from Shakespeare. The issues he wrote about such as race, sex, social status and power continue to be the struggles of modern society. They will learn valuable lessons from the mistakes of the characters and discover that throughout history the "more things change the more they remain the same."
Many of the current students do not read outside of the classroom.
They have limited exposure to literature from around the world. Shakespearean stories transcend time and culture. This will help them to see themselves as part of a global community and set the foundation for a future service learning project.
