My Students
The 700+ students I teach in Drama represent seven grade levels, three special education classes, and 13 different languages. We are a Title I school, so many of our families are struggling financially. We provide breakfast and lunch during the school year and summer, and multiple opportunities for extended learning.
Unfortunately, many of my students do not have opportunities to participate in extra-curricular activities such as theater, dance, and music.
My goal is to increase skills, boost confidence, and show appreciation in the area of fine arts.
My Project
The most obvious benefits of storytelling are encouraging imagination, creativity, and active participation. Other advantages include increasing children's willingness to communicate thoughts and feelings, verbal proficiency, and cooperation between students.
Storytelling dice will boost confidence in speaking skills, encourage imagination, and increase group participation.
The two drama jars I requested are full of cards with different feelings kids experience and choices they may be faced with. These will provide opportunities for students to use pantomime in order to recognize moods and feelings of others, and practice making kid-size decisions. These could also be used as discussion prompts, which will encourage verbal expression.
The board game, Curses, will be played with my 5th and 6th graders. It is a "family friendly" drama game that requires players to act out different scenes and talk like specific characters. This will be a fun way to sharpen a variety of drama skills.
