I am the PE teacher for almost 800 students at Riverside Elementary in West Jordan, Utah. We have a very diverse community, including families speaking 13 different languages. We also have three special education classes with students requiring a variety of special needs such as autism and down syndrome. These kids also participate in adaptive PE activities. Riverside is a Title 1 school, so many of our families are struggling financially. In addition to a high population of poverty, 30% of our families speak a language other than English, which creates a unique challenge for communication and parent involvement. Unfortunately, many of our students do not have the opportunity for extracurricular activities outside of school. My goal is to provide those for my students during the time I have them for PE.
