My Students

Our friendly school is located in the rural Florida Panhandle. It is too far from the big cities to get resources and just an hour from the coast to miss tourist dollars. Over 80% of our county students come from low-income families who make us a Title I county. If you've been to the world-famous sugar-white sands of Panama City Beach, you've driven through our one traffic light town. Unfortunately, on October 10th, 2018, our community was forever changed by Hurricane Michael.

Even as we have passed the three year anniversary, we are still facing the economic effects of the catastrophic storm.

Some students were displaced from the hurricane and/or lost everything that belonged to them. The worst part is that many adjust to a new reality of leaky roofs, cold drafts, and deadly black mold. They face this at school, home, and community events. There is no escape from the horror that we all experienced. There is no healing when the debris and damage have not been dealt with. There is no moving on when our biggest industry, timber and Apalachicola National Forest, will take tens of years to regrow. The storm devastated us financially, emotionally, and physically.

My Project

[MUSIC]: All the small things, I care if they bring. Always I know, they'll be lost fo' sho'! During special times of the year, my students need help getting things home.

These supplies will help kids deliver makeup work, forms, and projects to families that are watching, waiting, anticipating.

We have packets of paperwork at the beginning of the year and then again when we transition from letters to learning sight words. These 9x12 clear bags were cheaper than the manila envelopes and will ensure the papers are kept together and identified as special for parents to read. The smaller white bags will be used by the students as "mailboxes". They will be decorated and used to collect trinkets brought in by friends on Valentine's Day, Halloween and Christmas. The larger bags will provide a way to send bulk items home at the end of the year and when we are overflowing like in January with report cards, all their jackets we found in the lost-and-found, and new books. They are tall and can be folded over and stapled shut to get all items home.

The labels will help with these bags, envelopes, and all of the other "small things" in our world, to find their groupies. We label everything including headphones, glue stick caps, and dry erase markers.
