Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My educational philosophy is that every child deserves a quality education, regardless of where he or she grows up. I work in a school in the poorest Congressional district in the country. I teach 6th grade English-Language Arts to ESL and special-needs students in a small middle school.

My students are all immigrants or children of recent immigrants.

Most have little background knowledge about American history. We have been working very hard this year to fundraise a trip to Washington, D.C. For many, this will be their first time out of the city they grew up in. I love taking my students out on field trips to new places, building their knowledge and language skills while exposing them to new experiences.

My Project

However, due to severe budget cuts, we have funded a bare bones trip. We will be able to pay for public transportation down to D.C., and luckily most of the museums are free, but any "extras" are unavailable to us. While we are in our nation's capital, I would love to take the opportunity to learn more about the US Constitution. The Newseum is an amazing museum that can teach students a lot about the First Amendment. This will allow the Constitution to come alive for them. It would an incredible opportunity for my students.

Your help will allow my children to continue their growth and enable our classroom to continue to function on a high level, regardless of heavy budget cuts well out of our control.

My classroom is often a safe haven for my students, away from the tumult of city life and the lowered expectations of naysayers. With your generous donation, my students will be given a chance to continue to flourish even amid difficult circumstances. Thank you from all of us.
