My ELLs, or English Language Learner students, are laughter-inducing, young pre-teens juggling the terrors of adolescence in a big school. While some are brand new immigrants, many are also U.S.-born students who come from limited English homes or have learning disabilities that interfere with their academic progress.
Mastering social and academic English does not come easily to my students facing these kinds of challenges, nor is the task simple for their limited English proficient parents who rely on the school to help their children where they cannot due to long work hours or knowledge gaps.
My Project
Many of my students are newly immigrated to the country, and a vision check is one of the first requirements when enrolling in the school. Often, the results of the in-school eye check are the same: "you need glasses!" But for many of my students and their families who are new to the area, finding eye doctors, scheduling eye exams, and getting glasses fitted are another item on a long, overwhelming list of to-do's. I have students who have been recommended to get glasses since September, but for some reason or another, their families just don't seem to have the time. Meanwhile, my students struggle to see information on the board and are limited in how far they can move around the classroom. How helpful would it be for my students if eye exams and simple glasses fittings could come to them!
