All That Jazz: Reliving the Roaring 20s

My students need 35 copies of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, additional literature circle texts, and supplemental materials to make the Roaring 20's come alive.

My Students

When returning their class surveys at the end of the year, most of my students say F. Scott Fitzgerald's Jazz Age novel The Great Gatsby was the reading that most affected their lives. Unfortunately, future students will not be able to relate as only one of our classroom texts has all its pages.

I teach 120 high school juniors in a large urban high school.

Throughout our study of American literature, we examine the changing role of the American dream in our texts and in our lives. Students are eager to examine the time periods in which our novels are written to gain a deeper understanding of the author's perspective and to draw parallels between history and today. These types of connections encourage the deep thinking and reflection that is a hallmark of college- and career-ready students.

My Project

The diversity of these resources will change my students' learning experiences in countless ways. By studying The Great Gatsby as a whole class, we will practice deep reading and analysis of a complex work. The Sun Also Rises, All Quiet on the Western Front, the Langston Hughes poetry collection, and Winesburg, Ohio will be studied in literature circles. These small-group settings encourage academic discourse and encourage students to focus on a text that is personally interesting; furthermore, the study of these texts will support examination of themes and issues found in The Great Gatsby. Finally, the supplemental materials about art, music, and fashion will serve as inspiration for Socratic seminars and other discussions. These three groups of tools, from the whole-class novel to the literature circles to the supplemental materials, will encourage students to develop a sophisticated understanding of the Roaring 20's.

Your generous donation will support students for years to come.

Today's students are tomorrow's leaders, and the critical thinking skills facilitated by these materials will prove invaluable. Thank you for your support!
