My students are part of the special education program at my school, and I am trying to build the Resource English program with resources that will help these students connect to books and real world experiences in similar ways their non-disabled peers do every day. Most of my students have learning disabilities in the areas of reading and writing. Since they are at the high school level, the current school resources serve the 9th through 12th grade reading levels. My students need books ranging from 5th through 8th grade reading levels to bridge the learning gap.
These students love to read books, and being able to read a book on their own without assistance from a teacher or an adult is what these students crave.
My students have been asking for novels to read that they will enjoy, learn from, and be able to share with others. These students deserve to have that and so much more! I love to read and I want to continue to share that with my students for years to come.
My Project
I teach Resource English at the high school level. Many of my students have learning disabilities in the areas of reading and writing, but don't have regular access to books or resources at their reading level. My students love to read, and through Donors Choose they will be able to read and understand these novels on their own, while increasing their reading and writing skills.
These novels, "Wonder", "The Giver", and "Define Normal", will help me create 3 literature units for my special education students at their reading level.
My students requested to read a number of different novels this school year, and these books received the highest number of votes. This project will help to enrich their experience with reading and become stronger readers.
