This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
In fourth grade, students in our district are given the opportunity to learn to play the recorder. The recorder is a great because it gives the students a portable instrument they can take home and practice to supplement the in-class instruction.
At our school, the students struggle to pay for their own supplies.
To solve the problem, students have been given used recorders that they must return at the end of each school year. The recorders are often damaged, covered in teeth marks, and just gross. If the students at my school are required to pay for their own recorders, many of them will just not purchase one. It's time to refresh our supply of recorders to give to students in the event they do not purchase one so that every student has an equitable experience.
Having a class set of BoomWhackers are important because they introduce students to playing one note at a time and promotes students playing music together individually and as part of a large group. BoomWhackers are an engaging resource that are always guaranteed to spark interest in class participation. The BoomWhackers will remain with the school and are not intended to go home with students.
My students are passionate about music and crave opportunities to explore and master new musical skills, but they often do not have the money it takes to purchase musical instruments for themselves. When they are challenged to accomplish goals in music class, they go above and beyond to succeed and generally exceed expectations.
This project helps to meet Nevada Academic Content Standard for music, MU:Pr4.4.1 with guidance, sing and play instruments to age-appropriate literature.
