In fourth grade, students in our district are given the opportunity to learn to play the recorder. The recorder is a great because it gives the students a portable instrument they can take home and practice to supplement the in class instruction. Students that are temporarily excluded due to Covid-19 could utilize online materials to supplement learning the basics of playing the instrument. In the 2020-2021 school year, the fourth graders did not get the opportunity play the recorder. Therefore, the current fifth graders need a recorder in addition to the current fourth graders. Every student deserves to have an instrument of their very own. At our school, the students struggle to pay for their own recorder. To solve the problem, students have been given used recorders that they must return at the end of each school year. The recorders are often damaged, covered in teeth marks, and just gross. If the students at my school are required to pay for their own recorders, many of them will just not purchase one. Then if they are loaned a used recorder, it creates inequity among the students. This project helps to meet Nevada Academic Content Standard for music, MU:Pr4.4.1 with guidance, sing and play instruments to age-appropriate literature.
