All Students Can Learn On Different Days in Different Ways
My students need Math Manipulatives to help them understand number sense and story books to help them understand social situations and develop their social skills.
I am a Special Education Teacher in a the Resource Room. My students range from Kindergarten thru 4th grade. I teach in a public school setting in a rural area. It is a lower income area. But it has a large amount of parental volunteer support.
In my classroom we learn from every opportunity possible and I use every resource that I can get my hands on to help them be more successful.
My students come from a very diverse range of families, some are adopted, homeless, low income, and foster families. My students have different disabilities that qualify them for support in the Special Education Classroom. I have students who have Specific Learning Disabilities in one or more academic area, I have students with Traumatic Brain Injuries, students with Autism (ranging from high functioning to very low functioning), some with behavior problems, social disorders, students with Other Health Impairments, some students that are Intellectually Disabled, and some that are Emotionally Disturbed. No matter what the title of their disability is they have the desire to learn and the ability to show progress, they just need different strategies to be able to do it.
My Project
If you were to walk through the door of my classroom you would see students busy working on different levels of math skills. They would be using concrete materials (math manipulatives: Unifix ten frames, rekenreks, dice and number lines for basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division). They would be using representational methods (drawing pictures). They would also be using abstract methods (using only numbers and mathematical symbols). The purpose of teaching through a concrete-to-representational-to-abstract sequence of instruction is to ensure students truly have a thorough understanding of the math concepts/skills they are learning.
In my classroom we learn from every opportunity possible and I use every resource that I can get my hands on to help them be more successful.
My students struggle with different social skills and need to learn how to manage the behaviors that they have developed. My students have skill deficits that could later translate into occupational challenges. Through the use of picture books children are able to relate to social situations and develop a solution without accusing or criticizing classmates. With the help of some social skills teacher resource books I will be able to better prepare my students for other social situations outside of the school setting.
