Every minute of every day our bodies are receiving millions of messages from our sensory systems. For most of us, we tune into some and ignore others. Kids like mine who have sensory processing problems cannot do this effectively. Tools like these will teach them to regulate their sensory systems.
I have a great group of kids!
They are so eager to learn new things. Their favorite activities are the hands-on things we do every day. They love Friday cooking especially. We are an active group! Always busy, always moving. Because of our love for movement, it is incorporated into as much of the day as possible. In my classroom, children learn to read through integrated literacy units, practice math skills, and learn about the world around them in science and social studies. Students also work on life, social, and self care skills in my room.
I teach students with special needs in grades K through 5th. Many of my students have autism. Others have language delays, Down Syndrome, hearing impairments, and/or cognitive impairments. I teach at a public school in Indiana.
My Project
Sensory integration disorder is a common and debilitating problem facing many children today. Children with autism and other disabilities also frequently have sensory processing challenges. Research has shown that providing children with these sensory experiences helps them regulate their nervous systems allowing them to obtain maximum benefit from their education. A child who can not stop moving can not learn. Likewise a child who collapses in a heap on the floor overwhelmed by sensory stimuli also can not learn. Introducing a variety of sensory experiences will help children by giving them the input they are craving or increasing their sensory tolerance. The tools I have requested will provide the sensory input my children so desperately crave. Only when they learn to regulate their sensory systems can true learning in any area occur.
Your donation will provide my students the materials to address their sensory needs.
It will give them items to manipulate and tools to make school easier. Your donation will allow my children to satisfy their sensory needs and to fully access their learning environment.
