My Students
I teach the most amazing 3rd graders. Our neighborhood school serves students from PK-5 and is located in a very diverse area of our urban city. Our school focuses on building a community of learners and supporting children to develop socially and emotionally, as well as academically. We are over 80% free lunch and have many English Language learners.
Independent reading is the highlight of our day.
However, this is all online. I want to give them opportunities to hold books. We are half-way into the remote school year and my students are already avid readers and book lovers!
My Project
My students LOVE to read, however with schools closed, they do not have access to texts. Now that we are half-way through this remote school year. I want to make sure student have access to books while they are home. In this project, I have included fan favorites from previous years that will be sure to capture their interest! There is a good mix of graphic novels, chapter books, and nonfiction to spark their love of reading.
I have also included mini flashlights for students so that they can read by flashlight to spark more interest in continuing their learning at home.
Excitement for reading is fragile, however. Nurturing a love of books requires having new, exciting books to put into their hands. As my students are developing their love of reading, their to-read lists are growing faster than our classroom library.
