Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many obstacles they face, I am looking to provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences in the music classroom.

My students are eager to learn new things and love to participate in hands-on activities.

They enjoy singing and playing classroom instruments. My students have very few opportunities to participate in active music-making outside of the school day; therefore, it is my goal to give them a variety of musical experiences during class time.

My Project

Many of my students want to learn to play the piano. The eight portable keyboard packages will give my students the opportunity to learn basic piano skills by applying their knowledge of music theory in order to perform simple melodies.

Students will work on individualized lessons which will allow them to progress at their own pace in order to develop their keyboard skills to their fullest potential.

The keyboards will be used as a center rotation during class so that all students will have "hands-on" practice time.

Students will have the opportunity to perform a piece of their choice during a classroom recital at the end of the school year.
