I am lucky to work with a wonderful group of learners in my self-contained life skills class. My class consists of eight students with a wide range of abilities (8:1:1).
Our classroom is a community of learners that embrace one another.
Overall, my students are functioning on a pre-kindergarten to second-grade level academically, socially, and emotionally. My students are hard workers and are working towards reaching their goals with a giant smile on their faces. I am so lucky to work with my amazing students.
In a life skills classroom of students with severe disabilities, it is essential to have a wide range of materials to help my students have a successful school day and learning experience. For instance, having access to a sensory chair or using a foot peddler, as a reinforcer, can help my students work for new reinforcing items.
When it comes to learning for any child, one size does not fit all.
It is extremely helpful for my students to have access to sensory materials. A lot of children in my classroom seek sensory input or learn by using their senses. These materials will greatly help my students focus on their school work. The aroma diffuser will help my student that is blind, gain a different experience of knowing the holidays are coming up by smelling different scents. He uses his senses other than sight to learn about things.
I create a majority of the materials needed to teach my students their IEP goals. I teach a self-contained classroom consisting of eight students, two 1:1 aides, one classroom aide, and one teacher. I use a lot of velcro and laminating paper to create materials that will last them all year. As a special education teacher, it is a privilege to work with amazing students and parents. Every child deserves the chance to learn. I look forward to continuing to work with the wonderful children and their families.
