When you think of school, you think of learning. But for my students, school is more than just for learning. It is a safe haven and a place where they can escape the harsh realities from home.
My 12 and 13 year-old students are more than young teenagers.
At home, they are caregivers to siblings, and cooks, and they often play an adult role. They come to school to escape the crimes, drugs, and secondary trauma all around them.
Given this, my desire is to create a classroom environment where all students can feel safe, respected, and valued. I know that our school is located in one of the toughest areas. The neighborhoods aren't safe; they are filled with drugs, gangs, and violence.
However, students show up every day ready to learn because they want to change the trajectory of their future. They want to end the generational curse. I want to be there alongside my students, helping them achieve their goals. I want to provide a haven for my students where they can forget about the chaos around them, even if for just a little while. Together, we can remove barriers and help lift our community!
As we transition to more blended learning due to the current pandemic and restrictions, many students are being asked to bring their district issued laptops to school. However, their devices are several years old, many with missing keys, chargers not working, or partially cracked screens. They're working, but they're on their last leg. Furthermore, there are several students who do not have a device at all. This is due to not having funds readily available to purchase a replacement device.
My desire is to have an all-in-one workspace that will serve as a hub for students who forget their devices at home, or do not have a device at their disposal.
The hub will be sanitized between uses and will allow students to continue to learn using district log-in, applications and our Learning Management System.
Let's not penalize students from accessing learning due to matters beyond their control. The all-in-one hub will keep learning happening, all day!
