My Students

First graders often come to school brimming over with enthusiasm and excitement for learning, life, friends, and interests. This is an age commonly marked by tremendous growth, lost teeth, great emotional highs and less frequently some lows. First graders make big plans, jump into projects with both feet, work at a fast pace and don't want to miss a thing.

Our classroom is a family!

Our school is located on a Native American Reservation. Most of my students have had significant trauma in their lives. I work very hard to create a classroom where the students feel safe and loved!

Books help students develop basic language skills and profoundly expand their vocabularies - much more than other media. Books are interactive and they demand that kids think and use their imaginations. Putting books into a student's hands and reading them is empowering for the child.

My Project

As teachers, we know how important it is to encourage our students to read. Now, there's science to support having homes with as many books as possible.

I want my students to be able to have at least one book at home that they can successfully read to their families.

Many of the students I teach do not have one single book in their house. It is sad when I hear my students say that they do not have books in their homes. Many times throughout the year, I buy books for each one of my students to take home. When I heard about Donors Choose, I thought what a great way to get more support to put books in the homes of my students.

Teaching a child in a home with books positively impacts their future academic growth. Each addition to the home library helps children do better. That makes sense: A home with books encourages a culture of reading for enjoyment and talking about books.
