Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Thank you for yout interest in my Donors Choose project All Are Welcome Here.
My goal is to fill my classroom library with enriching books that represent cultures from all around the world.
There are a number of organizations that award children’s literature based on its cultural and diverse nature. Although there are hundreds of texts that have won such awards and honors, I have selected twenty-five texts to begin building my diverse library collection. These books include winners or honors of the Coretta Scott King Award, American Youth Indian Award, Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association Literature Award, and the Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Award.
Why is having a diverse classroom library important? Great question! Here in Clark County, the highest demographic of elementary students is of Hispanic/Latino descent at almost half of the student population. The white demographic is about five percent more than the Black/African American demographic. All other demographics, including Asian/Asian Pacific Islander, Hawaiian, and American Indian, are less than ten percent of the demographic.
As you can see, there is a diverse range of students in our district. Each and every child is important, and their cultures should be represented in the literature they are exposed to. However, roughly 44% of children’s books contain only white characters and do not represent the majority of the students they are being read to. By adding the books I have requested to my library, I will be welcoming all students of any background to find themselves in these stories. Students will be able to read and learn about the cultures of their peers. All are welcome, and all are represented here!
Having this project funded will mean the world to me and my students (pun intended)! Thank you for your support!
