"Being a musician maps the human mind for success, success in all avenues of life." –Tim Lautzenheiser
I teach music at a “highest poverty” school located in one of the most rural school districts in Florida; however, my school has some of the most positive students I have ever met.
My students love to learn and love music! They are very creative, often coming up with interesting musical ideas in class, and many of them love to show me songs that they have written at home.
My Project
In music class at my elementary school, my students are learning to play the instruments of the "Orffestra" - mallet instruments such as xylophones, metallophones, and glockenspiels. Our "Orffestra" also includes one "C" bass bar, which provides a beautiful low resonant pitch for songs in the key of C. Many songs for our older students in grades 3-5 are pitched in the key of C. However, many songs for younger children in grades K-2 are pitched higher in the key of F because their voices are higher.
We need an "F" Contrabass Bar to fill out the sound of songs that our younger students sing.
A Contrabass Bar is also a great way for younger students to apply the concept of steady beat. While playing the bar, they can really feel if their steady beat is matching the beat of the entire ensemble.
My school was closed for six days when Hurricane Irma hit Florida. However, it was nothing compared to what Puerto Rico went through with Hurricane Maria. Many schools were destroyed. Some schools are just now getting repaired enough for classes to resume. Some of those students were able to relocate from Puerto Rico to our school, and those students will be able to use these resources to enjoy a safe learning environment where their education includes the joy of music and song.
