Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have the privilege of teaching six amazing students in grades K-2. They are sweet, energetic and full of wonder. All of my students have communicative disorders and deficits in social as well as cognitive domains. As one of their first learning experiences I strive to create an environment that is safe, fun and engaging.
It is inspiring to see these students reach milestones that one might take for granted. With the right support, the sky is the limit for my students!
My Project
Most of my students are diagnosed with Autism and they have severe deficits with language. Art is a way my students can help express themselves. People with Autism often “think in pictures” and art is a vehicle for them to form ideas and express themselves in a way they might not otherwise be able to do so. Art also fosters turn taking, cooperation and sharing materials. In addition, art can help my students with their sensory issues and offer exposure to new textures in a fun and engaging way. These materials will help my students tremendously and impact them in a myriad of ways!
