This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in a high school that is considered to be a high need school where about 85% of my students get free lunch. Although they differ in their ethnicity and culture, they are similar in that they all have high expectations for themselves.

What they lack in economic stability they make up for in drive and determination.

They all want to be successful and work hard to reach our school goal of achieving 80% or higher academically. They want to make their families and teachers proud.

My Project

I have been teaching math for 20 years and every year the unit on polynomials and factoring is a challenge. Students have trouble remembering the processes because they do not have a conceptual understanding of what is really going on under the variables. So if I could use algebra tiles so they can SEE what is going on, they would have such a deeper understanding and be able to apply that understanding to other concepts.

Having this deeper understanding would also make it less likely that they will forget the process because now it is not just a series of steps to them but a concrete understanding.
