Alebrijes! Mexican Folk Art Sculptures

My Project

My students haven't had a certified art teacher this year until I came out of retirement and took the job in January. They are very eager to create and learn. This project incorporates culturally relevant folk art and history of Mexico. Our student body is largely of low socioeconomic status and has a high number of Hispanic students. I believe that they will all enjoy learning about these fantasy creatures, as well as the history behind the creation of the sculptures.

Because this is a poor area in rural Arkansas, students don't often have the opportunity to work with mediums such as Sculpey clay.

After studying the history and process of creating Alebrijes, each student will have the opportunity to create one or more of these folk art sculptures from Sculpey clay.
