"You are not a product of your circumstances, you are a product of your decisions."-Anonymous. My students come from many unusual circumstances that affect how they learn. My goal is to teach these children, they can overcome any obstacle in life, if they use the resources they are given.
My students live in a small, rural part of Arkansas.
Most of the student population is low-income, and many of the students depend on the meals at school. There is a sense of "home" at my school. You can tell how well the students interact with each other; most of the students have grown up together. My students come from unique situations, many from broken homes. The type of home life a child has affects how they behave at school. Our school works towards teaching these children structure, as well as giving them knowledge. Each week we practice social skills in hopes of preparing them how to be a civil, social, educated adult. The students in my classroom struggle with behavioral issues as well as support from home. Projects and activities that challenge them, and allow them to learn how to work with others will be very beneficial in helping them to work on behavior. Also, if they can learn to depend on a team, they will gain a sense of support while at school.
My Project
My students will be able to apply math to science and create their own solar energized car. My students need to learn the importance of responsibility and taking ownership of their work. This type of activity will challenge my students without them even knowing it! This activity will not only give them a sense of pride, but it will engage their minds. They will learn how math and science correlate. They will learn how the sun's solar energy is a renewable resource. We will learn how to use tools such as wire clips, that they may have to use in real life. We will also be using a Plant Lab, to teach students how to plant a seed and then do all the work it takes to help the plant grow. They will then be able to apply this knowledge to our fruit trees we will planting in the spring, and it can help them in the future if they ever decide to plant a garden of their own. Also, we will use the volcano kit to help them to understand how natural disasters happen and affect people and landscapes.
Donations to this project will improve my classroom by challenging and engaging my students.
This type of project will increase their knowledge, but it will also increase their ability to think critically. This is a skill that will carry them far in life. They will be better at working with others, as well as, being able to make decisions on their own. I truly believe this type of project will increase my students' attitudes about learning, and bad conduct will decrease.
