My students need 3 sets (30 each) of books for a rolling library, Aim Humane Academy, to teach Humane Education to every school with student created activities by the Canine Commandos. The three books are "It's Raining Cats and Cats!," "Buddy Unchained," and "Orville."
This project expired on December 29, 2011.
Hooray! This project is fully funded
Gandhi said it best. "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated." Canine Commandos will address overpopulation in shelters by providing Humane/Character Education through literature using a rolling library with ready-made lessons/activities.
Canine Commandos, 18 schools strong, provide basic obedience training to local shelter dogs in hopes of improving behaviors overlooked.
Our county shelters have a high rate of euthanasia and through research, many of these animals do not find homes due to lack of training. Many animals are placed in these "kill" shelters because the community does not spay or neuter which is the number one prevention for animal overpopulation. The Commandos have created Aim Humane Academy which includes a monthly article delivered to 70,000+ students, provides pictures for "pet of the week" shown over school TV news and now we want to provide education in the classrooms. The teachers will buy into this program if all materials are provided which includes lesson plans and activities. We all know teachers are stretched to the max; this is where the Commandos can make a huge change in educating our children about the importance if pet responsibility and ownership.
Aim Humane Academy will deliver a class set of books, like It's Raining Cats and Cats, to discuss overpopulation of animals (in this case, cats). Along with the set, the teachers will receive a lesson plan and extended activities. An activity that will go with this set is called, Enough is Enough: Spay and Neuter your Pets. Each student will be provided vocabulary, an introduction to overpopulation, then a hands-on activity where each student is given a craft stick representing their cat. One student's unaltered craft stick will be given to another student's unaltered craft stick. Then the teacher will hand the student 6 or so more sticks. This will continue around the room. Once completed, the students will graph the results per cat household and hold a class discussion. They will then create a product of choice, for example, to create campaign letters and posters, slide show presentation, or a public service announcement to show over close-circuit TV.
We know shelters in America are overrun with animals, especially in this challenging economy.
What's worse, litters are abandoned because of unaltered pets and lack of education. Studies prove to spay/neuter pets is less expensive than euthanizing our pets. Our county alone is in trouble with so many animals being put to sleep. We need to educate starting with our youngest children. Teaching humanity improves character too. This is a win-win for humans and animals; all deserve respect, kindness and care.
