My classroom serves a lively group of gifted ESL learners in grades 3-8 who are absolutely amazing with an insatiable curiosity for technology. They also love reading and discovering new things! This uniquely diverse population of scholars comes from bilingual, low-income homes in the inner city and sometimes the language barrier creates challenges for them. Unfortunately, we lack the resources to adequately support their needs.
Dismissal is the saddest part of our day because of the captivating digital experiences my 21st-century learners navigate through during our school day.
As they attempt to navigate the digital world they live in, my scholars embrace challenging activities that make them really think critically. In some cases, the gifted population is underserved and does not receive the same resources as other groups. My gifted students lack access to technology resources both during and outside of the school day.
I strive to use a variety of strategies that employ an innovative and interactive approach to prepare my scholars to become global leaders.
Mixed reality has remarkable potential for the K–8 classroom and beyond. Here is a tool that allows students to explore the molten core of our planet or get deep in the anatomy of a frog without ever picking up a scalpel — all with the click of a button. In the classroom we are constantly learning how technology is changing the world, AI, VR, and mixed reality is one way to totally captivate and immerse scholars in learning.
Mixed Reality Offers More Than a Field Trip
Research shows VR is not just a gimmick, but instead it can change the way students’ brains function in the classroom, While VR and AR technologies are still new, students are tempted to use them more, even if it’s for learning something new. Besides, reliving a mixed reality experience is more fun than reading a boring old book any day. An Oculus Quest 2 would be a game-changer in my classroom.
