My Project

Never count your chickens before they hatch? Well, we want to count some chickens....and then hatch their eggs too! Our fifth grade classes would like to revisit the basics of rural life by focusing on the the multi-disciplinary, hands-on agricultural activity of hatching and caring for chicks.

In our technological society, students are finding more time to spend with electronic games than with parents, grandparents, and older members of the community and therefore precious oral history and rural life educational opportunities are being lost.

Our school is located in a predominantly rural setting in Wisconsin. In a state known for its agriculture, it is sad to see so few kids excited about the rural life around them. I'd like to change that! This interdisciplinary project would allow the 125 fifth grade students in our school, and countless fifth grade students in years to come, the opportunity to learn a real-life rural skill. By hatching eggs with an incubator and caring for chicks, I hope to instill in my students an excitement for agricultural and an on-going respect for rural life.
