This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Imagine being 3 or 4 years old and walking into your pre-k class only to find that many bins in the table toy center are empty! Although I have bought many toys for my "table toys" center, I still have empty bins.
My class is a pre-kindergarten classroom within a pre-k through grade 8 public school.
My kids are great! They come in September as three or four year olds. When they come in, many haven't had any school experience at all. It is up to me to make them fall in love with being a student. In a few short weeks they not only love school, they learn how to make friends, share, write their names and simple math and science skills, as well as other important lessons. The amount of things they learn by winter recess is amazing! Their brains just absorb everything!
My Project
One of the items I requested is for my Science Center. One of the boxes is labeled Color Mixing. I will use this box to enhance the science table. Before they use the table I will have a lesson on mixing colors. At circle time I will read the book Mouse Paint by Ellen Stoll Walsh. After reading it, at the circle I will have a chart that they will help me fill out(red mouse + yellow mouse = orange mouse). They will then go to their seats. At their seats they will get a pallet (plate) with two primary colors (they choose from blue, red & yellow) paint (frosting), they will then mix the colors and "paint" their cup cakes. Once they explain what they did, they will then be allowed to eat their masterpiece! We will then go to centers. Students who choose to go to the science center will have the activity box there waiting for them to play with. I will also have the chart we just worked on posted for them to refer to. All of this will help my babies not only understand, but to own the lesson.
To a regular person it seems as though all I requested are toys.
In my eyes I am requesting materials that tomorrow's accountants will use to learn how to count, architects will use to learn how to problem solve and build their first solid fixture. These materials will bring hours of joy to my kids who will have no idea that they are learning important skills that will last a lifetime! Please help me provide for them a learning environment that will make them love school for years to come!
