My Students
My students are mathematical geniuses who aren't given the benefit of the doubt. Though their math skills are low, with the right tools my students can conquer Algebra 1. I work in a high-needs, low-income, large urban public school district in New Jersey. Our students are primarily African-American and Hispanic, and they include a high number of special education students. Every student is provided the opportunity for a free breakfast, and more than 85% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch.
My Project
Have you ever sat in a math class, nervous, palms sweating, unable to focus on the teacher and the activity at hand because you're so anxious, in a bad way? If this has happened to you, just as I have seen with many students, math classes becoming crippling. My students are in need of a few Chromebooks to help reduce this anxiety from occurring! Over the past year, my students have been using an online, agent-based program that is tailored to their needs as learners. Each program is designed for each student, so no two students are doing the exact same thing. The programs are designed to be interactive (to keep students social), competitive (as students earn points), as well as learning (reviewing, reinforcing, and discovering).
Over the course of a few months, with the implementation of online programs, I have watched the anxiety of a few students decrease inside of my classroom through the help of these tailored programs.
Students are more confident in their work on a daily basis because their foundational skills have been reinforced, their problem-solving skills have improved, and their desire to participate in class has increased!
With a few Chromebooks on hand, students would be able to continue to work on their individual learning plans in exchange for classwork, as a reward for completing assignments, and during extra help sessions. Chromebooks living inside of our classroom would provide for us the flexibility to use the programs when necessary, not just when mandated.
