Ag Mechanics Oxyacetylene Cutting and Brazing

My students need a safe, quality oxy-acetylene torch outfit for the oxyfuel portion of Agricultural Mechanics, to replace the dangerous, non-functional unit that we have.

My Students

My students come in for each class very enthusiastic about learning to use fabrication equipment to learn skills that will benefit them either in future careers or for their own hobbies. They love to go from the classroom to the shop and apply the things they learned to hands on projects and tasks.

My students tend to be very hard working rural teenagers who come into my class excited to learn skills that they can either take home to the farm and put them to use, or that they can use in order to get a job in the area of Agricultural Mechanics.

The same skills that many of them take my class to learn translate directly into lifelong skills that they can apply towards good careers. Many of them are not wealthy students, as we are in a fairly low income school district. Our school is making great effort to boost the achievement level of our students. It is an aging facility, and much of the equipment in my educational shops is outdated, no longer functions correctly, and in some cases is outright dangerous to use. This makes it exceedingly difficult to thoroughly teach students hands on skills in a safe, efficient manner, as well as making it difficult to prepare them for modern jobs in this field. Our school and county budget allows for very limited equipment upgrades.

My Project

Our students are taught the principles of using oxyfuel cutting and welding equipment in the classroom through the use of textbook materials, notes, and video materials. Generally I will then take them to the shop and give them a very limited demonstration of how a cutting torch and welding torch operate. Our equipment is aged and does not function properly, and is dangerous to use. I do not let students handle it themselves because of the risk of serious injury or death. I would like to replace our aged machinery with a new cutting and welding outfit that is safe and is the same as what these students will see should they choose to go into the industry. If I am able to get new equipment I will give them hands on labs where they are able to operate cutting torches to cut detailed parts, as well as use oxyfuel welding processes to braze and weld sheet metal. All three of these skills are in demand, and there are not enough students who posses them to fill the available jobs.

These donations will allow students to get the hands on practice needed in order to apply the knowledge they gain in the classroom to real world situations and develop skills that they can use.

The only way to truly learn this equipment is to have hands on time using it, which we cannot deliver at the moment. Students will be able to develop and fine tune those skills to the point that it will help some of them to find employment, and at the least will give them lifelong skills they can use.
