My Students
Our students embody a low-income demographic on the Southside of Oklahoma City. Our district is 100% free lunch and our school lacks many opportunities for extracurricular activities. These kids deserve art!
My students are energetic and eager to learn, with a great love for art!
Many of the kids are ELL students and need chances to explore the English language through different avenues. Due to their lower income demographic and life situations, would benefit greatly from opportunities for artistic expression!
My Project
I am interested in providing an extracurricular art group for my students where they paint along with me to create their own masterpieces to take home. We all paint the same image using 10"x 14" sized Fredrix brand canvas pads (canvas without the wooden frame), a few different sized paint brushes for different thicknesses of line and paint application (nylon brushes are firm but flexible and provide a smooth application of pigment), and acrylic paint (I've requested Chromacryl from Dick Blick, as I am familiar with the fine quality of this product). Acrylic paint is quick-drying but also easy to "erase" mistakes with. Using these materials, I guide the kids step-by-step until the painting is complete.
This group is intended to provide an opportunity for kids to express themselves artistically, keeping them out of trouble after school, and providing a healthy stress relief and sense of community.
Painting as artistic catharsis is a known stress-reliever, and these kids face many struggles daily growing up on the Southside. Art awakens children's inherent creativity, inspires kids to excel scholastically and in other areas of their lives, and gives them the confidence to pursue their passions which contribute to a brighter world!
